Free-Motion Quilting

You can create beautiful designs over the surface of your quilt while not having to rotate it. Learn how to stitch swirls, loops, florals, and webbing while adding texture and depth to your quilts. Stencils will also be used!

Skill Level: Beginner

Must be comfortable with the operation of your machine. One practice quilt sandwich will be provided the day of class.

Teacher: Carole Frye

Quilting is Carole's love and color is her passion. She has always loved creating things. Quilting quickly became an obsession after making her first quilt. It is Carole's source of artistic expression. This eventually led her to pursue teaching.

Carole has been teaching quilt making for over 30 years and continues to find joy in sharing knowledge and teaching others. Her mission is to create an encouraging and inspiring experience for both learning and instilling confidence in her students. She believe in skill building while having a good time!

Carole is originally from the east coast. She studied art in college and moved to sunny California in 1978! She lives in Oxnard with Ken and their little dog Jake.

Supply List: Free-Motion Quilting with Carole Frye

  1. Bring your best machine for this class. If you have a full-sized machine and a smaller, class sized machine, bring the larger of the two. NOTE: Your machine MUST be in excellent working order, cleaned, oiled and recently serviced.

  2. Bring the slide-on table is your machine came with one or an extension table such as those from Sew Steady. This provides the necessary large flat surface you need. A must!

  3. Manual for your model machine, foot pedal and cords.

  4. Bring your darning foot and whatever free motion feet you have. Make sure the feet you have work with your machine. Consult with the dealer of your brand of sewing machine as the right foot may need to be ordered.

  5. Quality threads, bring colors you like.

  6. Marking implements: Blue wash-out and white chalk pencils.

  7. Ruler for marking - approximately 18" x 2.5"

  8. Paper and pencil for sketching and note taking

  9. Sewing tools (scissors, seam ripper, replacement needles, all the usual things)

  10. Quilting gloves (optional)

  11. Supreme Slider (optional)

A practice quilt sandwich will be provided the day of class. If you would like to bring extras, you can get three 14” cuts across the width of quilting cotton. Please use 100% cotton solids or almost solids and quality batting. No odd-sized scraps or prints.
